Missionary Standing Strong Amidst Persecution

(5 March 2009)

Dhoni Paswan won't leave, even though he has been threatened. He refuses to let the anti-Christian extremists win.

Dhoni is a Gospel for Asia missionary who works in a village in Uttar Pradesh, India. His work has been fruitful, and in 2008 he was able to purchase land to construct a church building. He also received the go-ahead to drill a Jesus Well on the land.

Almost immediately Dhoni met with fierce opposition from a local extremist group. When work on the Jesus Well started, these radicals blocked the site and demanded the Christians pay a bribe of 20,000 Indian Rupees (£274). The extremists told the pastor, "We will not allow you to work unless you give money!"

The work on the well stopped until January, when Dhoni approached the men, asking them to quit opposing his work. They refused, so Dhoni reported the matter to the local police. The extremists became angry and threatened to beat the pastor and kick him out of the village.

GFA leaders in Uttar Pradesh encouraged him to leave the village for a few days until things calmed down, but Dhoni refused.

"I left my home for the sake of my Jesus, and if something happens to me, let it happen on the mission field," Dhoni told them.

Please pray for Dhoni and the tense situation. Pray that no harm would come to Dhoni and his family, which includes six children and his elderly mother.

Above all, pray that God will speak to the hearts of the extremists who are tormenting Dhoni.
