The Garo Meghalaya Region
Garo is a majestic region. The land’s beauty and abundance of wildlife draw tourists from around the world.
Each village has a centre for music and performance, which are both integral in Garo life. The Garo people are mainly farmers, growing crops such as cashews, sugarcane and mustard. They work primitively without any machinery or animals. Each November after the harvest comes the high point of their year: Wangala, a huge festival thanking the “sun god,” whom they consider their provider. People dress in elaborate clothing and celebrate with dancing, music and toddy, homemade rice beer.
Most people in the Garo Region follow the religion of their ancestors, including spirit and animal worship.
